About this course...
This course is for singers of all standards who would like to improve their jazz singing through studying recordings of some of the great jazz vocalists. We will be looking at one vocal performance each week from Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holliday, Mel Torme and Eddie Jefferson. We will be studying both the delivery of the song and the improvisational aspects - eg 'second choruses' or scat solos. We will explore ways in which we can incorporate what we have learned into our own performance and practice some of these techniques in the class.
Activities include...
-
Listening to and singing sections of each performance
-
Practicing the delivery of the song with reference to the recording
-
Identifying improvisation techniques and exploring them in the class
-
Studying each performance in relation to the song form and chord sequence
-
Exploring the storytelling aspect of each performance
